Complex Sentence แปลว่า “สังกรประโยค” หรือ “ประโยคที่มีเนื้อความซ้อน” หมายถึง ประโยคใหญ่ที่ประกอบขึ้นมาจากประโยคเล็ก 2 ประโยค ซึ่งใน 2 ประโยคนี้มีความสำคัญไม่เท่ากันนั่นคือ ประโยคหนึ่ง เรียกว่า Main Clause (ประโยคหลัก) ส่วนอีกประโยคหนึ่งเรียกว่า Subordinate Clause (ประโยคอาศัย) เป็นประโยคที่ต้องอาศัยประโยค Main Clause เสียก่อนแล้วจึงได้เนื้อความสมบูรณ์

Complex sentence ประกอบด้วย independent clause หนึ่ง clause และ dependent clause หนึ่งหรือสอง clause ขึ้นไป
Dependent clause จะประกอบด้วยภาคประธาน และภาคแสดง และมีคำขึ้นต้น clause ด้วย เช่น after, when, as soon as, where if, although เป็นต้น dependent clause อยู่ลอยๆไม่ได้ต้องเชื่อมกับ independent clause จึงจะมีความหมายสมบูรณ์ Dependent clause แบ่งเป็น

1. Adverbial clause

– All classes were canceled because the weather was bad.
2. Adjective clause

– Children who are under twelve years must be accompanied by their parents.
3. Noun clause
IC DC
– I can’t understand why you did such a thing.
